How this is calculated

Bitcoin is divisible to eight decimal places, and a satoshi is that smallest slice: 1 BTC = 100,000,000 sats. Converting to dollars is a single multiplication — USD = sats ÷ 100,000,000 × BTC price — so the only moving part is the live price, which this page fetches every time you load it (with a cached fallback if the API is unreachable).

Thinking in sats is more than a curiosity: it makes small amounts legible. A $5 coffee priced in BTC is a seven-decimal fraction, but in sats it's a clean whole number. As long as Bitcoin trades above $1M per coin, one sat will still be worth less than 1.1 cents — so sats remain the natural unit for everyday sums.

Frequently asked questions

What is a satoshi?
A satoshi (sat) is the smallest unit of Bitcoin — one hundred-millionth of a coin (0.00000001 BTC). It's named after Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. Prices for small purchases are often quoted in sats because whole-BTC numbers get unwieldy.
How many satoshis are in one Bitcoin?
Exactly 100,000,000 (one hundred million) satoshis make one Bitcoin. That's fixed by Bitcoin's protocol and never changes, no matter the price.
How much is 1 satoshi worth in USD?
One satoshi is worth the BTC price divided by 100 million. The converter above always shows the live figure — with BTC around $64,179, one sat is roughly $0.0006418.
